'Aelita: Queen of Mars' and 'Battleship Potemkin'

We're delighted to release brand new posters for the bizarro sci-fi soap-opera 'Aelita: Queen of Mars' (1924) and the propaganda masterpiece 'Battleship Potemkin' (1925) by Sam Chivers and Rafa Orrico

Whilst Battleship Potemkin surely needs no introduction by now, Aelita is  somewhat less known, though just as influential. Part soap opera, part sci-fi movie, Aelita is based on Alex Tolstoy's novel of the same name, and, spoiler alert, tells the story of how the love affair between a human engineer and the Queen of Mars brings down the ruling elite on the Red Planet. The constructivist Martian sets by Isaac Rabinovich and Victor Simov and costumes designed by Aleksandra Ekster in Aelita have inspired a number of later films including Fritz Lang's Metropolis and Flash Gordon among many others.

Sam Chivers and Rafa Orrico have both tackled these early Soviet films head on and their stunning posters feel both modern and timeless. We love them and we hope you will too.

'Aelita: Queen of Mars' and 'Battleship Potemkin' will go on sale Tuesday 24 September at 5pm UK time exclusively through our shop
