'RAN' by  João Ruas

For 'RAN' João Ruas has created three different images, one for each of Hidetora's sons: Jiro, Taro and Saburo; and each identifiable by their iconic banner colours. In Japanese culture red traditionally symbolises violence, yellow is said to signify courage and blue represents calmness and purity. We like to think that João's posters echo these symbolic correlations as 'Taro' celebrates the warrior figure,  'Jiro' can be seen facing the long journey ahead, and 'Saburo' is a stripped down image, leaving out all elements extraneous to the art. 'Katana' by Thomas Danthony

'Katana' is yet another masterclass in minimalism from Thomas Danthony. Simple at first glance but complex in execution, Thomas Danthony has created these pieces using a technique developed by himself that consists of applying gouache using various brush techniques and stencils, the latter of which only survive two or three applications as they degrade after each use. Three very lucky people will get to admire the results at close quarters. It is a tired cliché but you really have to see these up close to appreciate the craft.
